Rarotongan is one of the Polynesian languages that is spoken in the Cook Islands. It is an Eastern Polynesian language that is the official language of the Cook Islands officially known as Cook Islands Māori. Cook Islands Māori is closely related to New Zealand Māori, but is a distinct language in its own right. Categories: Cook Islands.. Cook Islands Maori is also known as Rarotongan, named after the island's capital, and is the most commonly spoken form of Maori. However native Cook Islanders more often refer to it as Te reo Ipukarea which quite literally translates to 'the language of the Ancestral Homeland'.
